Letter to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg
May 5, 2007
Mayor Bloomberg,
In October of 2002, a year and a month after the worst terrorist attack ever perpetrated against the United States, you appointed Omar Mohammedi, the General Counsel of CAIR-New York, to New York City’s Human Rights Commission. At the time, you were criticized for this, yet you decided to stand by your choice and keep Mohammedi on.
Now, it’s nearly five years later. Since the appointment, Mohammedi has provided legal representation to:
* Sam Solomon, the creator of www.answering-christianity.com, a website that describes Christians as “Satanic” and Jews as “evil doers”
* Six radical imams that were removed from a plane for exhibiting “suspicious behavior,” whose leader was a representative for two separate Hamas charities
* The World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY), a Saudi-based group with offices around the globe that publishes incendiary materials against Jews and openly supports Hamas
The latter client is being sued for its role in the 9/11 attacks.
Today, Omar Mohammedi holds the position of President of CAIR-New York. CAIR was created by Hamas in 1994. At least four leaders from CAIR have been charged by the U.S. government with terrorist activity. To this day, CAIR refuses to condemn Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorist organizations. Mohammedi has refused to condemn these groups as well.
Mr. Mayor, your appointment of Omar Mohammedi to a commission on human rights has done nothing but dishonor those that were murdered on 9/11. Mohammedi should not sit on any kind of human rights commission. He should be shunned.
For all the reasons stated, and many more that could be said, we call on you to right the wrong you made five years ago, and release Omar Mohammedi from his duties as Commissioner.
