Ellison Will NOT Be Appearing at the CAIR Banquet

Earlier this week, Christine posted an entry, in which she stated that Congressman-Elect Keith Ellison would be speaking at the annual CAIR banquet on November 18th. Since then, information has emerged to the contrary.

Congressman-elect Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, will not address a meeting of a controversial Islamic organization Saturday even though the group has been advertising since the election that he would be the keynote speaker.

The Council on American Islamic Relations announced Nov. 9 that Ellison, a Minnesota Democrat, would be the keynote speaker at the group's annual banquet on Nov. 18.

[...]

However, Bridget Cusick, a spokeswoman for Ellison, told Cybercast News Service Wednesday that Ellison had never accepted the group's invitation and was never scheduled to appear at the banquet.

"We have four events in the state that day and they've been on the calendar for a long time," she said. "The invitation was extended to us and somewhere in translation between our scheduler and the conversation that had happened about it with someone else, there was just a miscommunication."

Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for CAIR, told Cybercast News Service that Ellison was still listed on the banquet schedule because he would address the group through a videotaped message.

Could this be a sign of progress? I wouldn't take it as such, given his association with the extremely xenophobic Nation of Islam. It would appear that either Mr. Ellison's spokesperson was telling the truth, or he is trying in vein to placate those who have had the sense to call him out for his ties to racist groups and his affirmation of radical rhetoric. If this is indeed an effort made in the latter capacity, this is no doubt inadequate. By virtue of retaining any affiliation with CAIR and similar groups, and not repudiating what they truly stand for, he remains unfit to serve in the US government.

Absolutely, Caleb, and I'd be surprised if they actually show the "video speech" by Ellison that they claim to have. Meanwhile they're stonewalling - they're still advertising that he's one of the speakers. Who knows, maybe he'll phone it in...

No matter the cause, whether it's Ellison retreating from CAIR or CAIR's SOP disorganization, it's a welcome snafu. The UAE just isn't getting its money's worth...
